Ceiling Fan Help \ Content requests \ trying to repair very old fan

Our fan is a Hunter that is apprx 25 or 30 yrs old and worked with a wall switch. Think it was before remotes were invented. It hasn't worked in probably 10 yrs and now my husband has decided to try and fix it rather than replace it. The lights still work. I think the fan just stopped working but I really don't remember how it quit. He took it down to replace the switch and found another problem. There is a little black box inside where the switch box is and it is melted very badly so I definately think he found the problem. What is the little black box and can it be replaced?

It is the capacitor and is very easily replaced. Order a new one from http://www.hunterfan.com
