I have an Old Jacksonville fan in a home built 2000. The fan has 4 speed settings. The fan runs at the lowest speed without any problem, but at higher speeds it doesn't run as fast as I know it should. It sounds like the fan works for a couple seconds and then turns off for another couple seconds, only to repeat this cycle again. The motor makes a general humming/buzzing sound that is louder than it ever was during normal operation.
After reading your troubleshooting and capacitor section, it sounds to me like a capacitor problem. Could a capacitor go bad after 10 years? Is there something else that could be wrong? I would like some experienced input before buying a $20 capacitor.

Capacitor wouldnt cause a buzzing noise. Sounds like something might be loose. Could also need new bearings/oiling. My money is on the latter.
Good fan, dont toss it.

Have you tried contacting the company that installed your ceiling fans. I think those fans have a lifetime warranty or at least a good discount on parts for owning there fan. a capacitor would probably be cheap if not free.
