I've read that you shouldn't connect a ceiling fan to a dimmer switch. That's exactly what my electrician did. I made a point to never touch the dimmer switch, using only the remote to control the fan + light (Hunter... not sure of the model).
Long story short, someone comes into my room looking to turn the light on, does something with the dimmer switch, and now the fan and light don't work. I've tried messing with the pull strings and remote (which still lights up), but nothing. I flipped the fuse in the garage, and nothing. I opened the dimmer switch on the wall hoping to find a reset, but nothing.
Any ideas?

Remove the dimmer switch, replace with a regular on/off switch.
Open the fan at the ceiling, remove the remote receiver, wire the fan without it.
See if it works from the pullchains.
