I want to replace our two Emerson fans in our long, narrow living room with two new 6 speed ones (mostly due to color). Very rarely do I want the fan on high but would love to have a speed where the air is barely moving. Right now both fans (no lights) are on one box switch but we do have the capability of using another switch if necessary. I am noise sensitive and understand the variable speed controls are more prone to humming. There is a space restriction where I need to replace with the same 42" size. Casablanca is out of my price range, especially if I am buying two, so what manufacturer do you suggest for 6-speed, 42", no light fan or do I just get a 3-speed and can adjust speed by installed box controls? Thanks, Sue

Casablanca is the only manufacturer I know of that sells 6 speed fans. Emerson might as well.
I also like the really slow speeds. You can achieve these with a capacitor based wall control, or by putting additional capacitors in series.

Never use induction type speed controls on newer fans. These type of controls havent been used on consumer models since the early 1980's.

So are capacitor type controls the same as induction??? I can ask my electrician friend if he understands putting capacitors in series because I have absolutely no idea how that works and the potential effect on the fan motor.
Did not find a 6-speed Emerson, however I found a high quality Casa Vieja fan (Optima) that I can customize for smaller blades so ready to buy. It's only 3 speed though. Thanks, Sue

makhandy is referring to solid state speed controls. They are ok on stack type motors such as Emerson k55 and Casablanca XLP (3 speed models only) and industrial ceiling fans. Basically any fan with an 18 pole motor instead of 16. I dont like them because they are noisier and fans stall out at slower speeds.

What are your old Emerson fans?

I think I will give up then on my 6 speed quest -- don't want to potentially create more noise (or damage!). Still have my two last Emersons on the ceiling. Sold two others in the past for about $30.00 in the local free ads. Thanks, Sue

I doubt the quality of new fans under $300 will be comparable to your Emersons. If you ever decide to replace them, let me know.
