Ceiling Fan Help \ Ceiling Fan Problems \ Runaway Ceiling Fan

I have an old ceiling fan with variable speed that I run fairly slowly. However, when it wants to, it occasionally starts going full speed by itself. I have to turn it off and keep it off for a while before it will operate normally again. Is there a cheap easy way to fix this, or should I just get another fan? Thanks for any comments.

you could try replacing the variable speed switch, but if you are not that experienced with electronics, you may have to get a new fan

What make is the fan? Pics would help identify. IS it a Slumber Quiet Casablanca?
