Just bought a nice Kichler 300119 for the porch. This is a very nice fan except it doesn't move any air. Much to my dismay, designing and selling fans that do not move air is an industry standard. Yes I am referring to the "hugger style flush mount" fans. Natually I did my homework and learned that I needed a damp rated fan with a 14" pitch blade and solid motor. The problem is that not one retailer I checked provided the real information that I needed, distance from blades to ceiling and airflow rating. This amounts to fraud in every sense of the word. The thing just wobbles fighting itself to push air down. The blades are in fact, only 6" from the ceiling. It pulls air up ok and doesn't wobble but that is nearly useless. Now I am left with the inconvenience of lowering it in some way or dis-assembling it and sending it back.
Anyone know why these fans are marketed serving no function but as a decoration?

Most hugger fans move SOME air, but not as much as downrod fans. It depends on other factors like the quality of motor, size and pitch of the blades, distance from walls, etc.
A LOT of fans sold today move very little air, either because they are cheap or because they are designed to be more decorative than functional.
You want an effective fan, buy a Hunter, Casablanca (XLP) Emerson (K55) or Envirofan (GOLD LINE).
How tall is your ceiling?
