Ceiling Fan Help \ Ceiling Fan Problems \ Hunter Fan-Wall control wiring problem
threetikis Posted on 5/7/2009 7:28:21 AM
My house is prewired with Regency fan and light controls with each control having a 4 position slide (No Remotes). Most are just hooked up to a ceiling light with no fan and the light works fine with the light switch slider. I decided to replace a light with a Hunter fan with light kit. I took out the old light and found 4 ceiling wires - Green, White, Black and a Red(which had not previously been used). I connected them as follows:

Green to Green
White to white
Black to black
Black/white(fan) to Red (ceiling)

When I tried this the light sliding switch turned on the fan and the lights did not work at all. So I made a change as follows:

Black (fan) to Red (ceiling)
Black/white (fan) to Black (ceiling)

In this arrangement the lights work fine but the fan only works if the light are on.

Any suggestions?

It sounds like the switch might be wired wrong! Check it in the wall, or call the electrican back that put them in!

Check also that the light is wired properly at the bottom of the fan.

Thank you cfanrepair. You are correct. The switch was wired wrong at the time it was originally installed. Everything working great now.
