Ceiling Fan Help \ Ceiling Fan Problems \ Hampton Bay Humming: no fan control
jmarino Posted on 3/30/2009 11:41:28 AM
Greetings!

We have three identical fans/lights/remotes in our house. One fan recently stopped working.

Here's what I know and what I've done:

1. No pull chains
2. No electrical issues
3. Checked remotes to ensure correct dip switch settings.
4. Swapped remote brains and remotes between good and problem units. Same issue persists.
5. When I turn the lights on with the remote, no problem.
6. When I turn the fan on any fan setting, I hear a hum, can feel a slight vibration on the fan housing, but the fan won't spin, even with hand start.
7. Fan has had a slight hum, even when functional, for as long as I can remember, but now is much louder and non functional.
8. Fan is about 9 years old.

Thoughts, suggestions, and recommendations all welcomed and appreciated!

Thanks!

So when you switch out the brains, the same fan still doesnt work?

How many wires does the "brain" have? If it's only 5, then there ar additional electronics in the fan, and you need to check the reverse switch and capacitor, one is bad.

Thank you for your reply!

I swapped in two working "brains" to be sure... same issue. Fan motor basically humming...

The connections all terminate to a 9 position connector that plugs into a yellow "brain" that passes two other connectors on to the light kit.

So when you swap "brains" the same fan still doesnt work, am I correct?

It is either a bad connector to the "brain", additional electronics inside the fan are bad (there usually arent any) OR the motor itself is done for (in which case there's nothing you can do).

You are correct...

Motor is done... I think we have a dead short some where in the winding... I can get some movement if I give it push.

One of the coils is either open or not connected. There are two total.
