Since the fan is mounted in a 4 cu in box there is no room for both the wires and the remote rxer in the canopy.
So, I have the choice of adding an external box w/ more wire space...or I had the following idea.
If I just wired the fax to the existing three wires, is there a in wall fan/light switch that acts as both a switch and a receiver for a separate external remote?

There isnt. You can wire the receiver somewhere in the ceiling above the fan, or find a way to fit the wires with it in the box (smaller wire nuts maybe) or simply use a wiremold box extension to give you more room.
